Open Employment – Does it work?

Open Employment

Many perceive the value of open mainstream employment, that is where an individual works in regular employment with little support and alongside non-disabled persons, to be the only way forward for employment of persons with learning disabilities.

Although we agree fully that open employment is by far the most inclusive setting, we also acknowledge that not everyone has the right skills or indeed aptitude to work in an environment that is not designed around their needs. The responsibility on the employer is substantial especially because they may not have the expertise to support individuals with such specific needs.

Supported employment is therefore a necessary solution for those who need full time support, when open employment has not managed to fulfill the individuals’ goals and aspirations to the full.
